Metropolitan Museum of Art koopt 8500 foto's

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art said on Thursday it had acquired 8,500 photographs collected by industrialist Howard Gilman, whose archive it said had helped define the history of photography.

The collection includes American Civil War pictures by Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan, as well as work by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Man Ray. The collection was put together between 1977 and 1997 by Gilman, the chairman of the Gilman Paper Company, who together with his curator Pierre Apraxine sought out iconic and classic works from the 19th century and early 20th century.

The New York Times said the collection's market value could exceed $100 million.

Some 20 pictures from the collection will go on display on April 17 and more will be available during the year.
